I’ve been using MI solely for the purpose of tracking outbound links.

In UA this worked well and all outbound links could be seen under Events, and then selecting Event Action would show the URL.

In GA4 outbound links are not shown at all other than under ‘Events in last 30mins’ and selecting the action dropdown. This is obviously a bit pointless.

I had to create a custom parameter to get GA4 to show some semblance of outbound links, but this isn’t a solution as you can’t extract, manipulate or otherwise do anything with the information.

What is the exact procedure for tracking outbound links with MI in GA4, and does anyone have screen shots of what this looks like in GA4?

    Hi @c-m,

Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry about the trouble here.

If you haven’t resolved this yet, would you be able to reach out to us at https://www.monsterinsights.com/lite-support/ so we can take a closer look at what’s going on?

    Thanks so much!

@devmich I don’t see how your reply addresses the issue, and I’d like to know the answer too.

In GA4, I see events called “click”, but I’m not sure what they are, or what was clicked. In GA3, I see no such events. The site has enhanced link tracking turned on.

How does MonsterInsights track link clicks? How can we make sure it’s working?

How is MonsterInsights making this type of tracking useful in GA4?

    Hi @galbaras,

Sure thing. Assuming there is no duplicate tracking happening on a website and GA4 has been correctly configured, MonsterInsights tracks outbound links as click events with outbound parameters set to true. If you open the detailed report for clicks, you’ll be able to see a card that indicates how many of those clicks are outbound clicks.

One configuration or setting we help check is whether or not Google’s built-in enhanced measurement tracking has been disabled. Google’s enhanced measurement option doesn’t need to be enabled for our users for downloads tracking, scroll tracking, etc, since MonsterInsights already provides these advanced custom tracking features, and leaving the option on sometimes interferes with our tracking.

    I hope this helps.
