• I am trying to export content from ajedrezmalaga.wordpress.com to ajedrezmalaga.info.
The created “export file” does not contain any posts.
Once imported, although categories are showing on the dashboard they do not show on the site.
The image library from ajedrezmalaga.wordpress.com has been imported to ajedrezmalaga.info but the images are not attached because the relevant articles have not been copied.
After repeating the export/import process several times, I have not been able to produce an export file that includes articles.
What am I doing wrong?

• How large is the export file?

856Kb

I have tried to create an export file for posts only but they were not in the file which was only 412Kb

Do you see any errors when you carry out the import?

Thread Starter artwebster

(@artwebster)

Only ertrors of ommission. The import file does not make any changes to the web site at ajedrezmalaga.info but some changes are apparent in the dashboard.
For example, the dashboard shows ten imported categories but they do not show up on the website.
Although there are 128 posts on ajedrezmalaga.wordpress.com – none of them are in the export file although the attached graphics are.

Can you elaborate on “only errors of ommission”?

As I said, the import correctly shows the post categories from ajedrezmalaga.wordpress.com in the ajedrezmalaga.info Dashboard but they do not show up on ajedrezmalaga.info web site.
The export file omits to record any of the text or titles of any of the 128 articles but it does contain the images associated with the articles.
A short introduction to the web site is in the export file from ajedrezmalaga.wordpress.com but that has not been transferred anywhere that I can see on ajedrezmalaga.info website

I have spotted three files in the Media library labeled auladeajedrez.wordpress.2012-10-17.xml_.txt and they seem to contain the posts.
How do I use the importer to copy these files?

Thread Starter artwebster

(@artwebster)

I have copied these files to my desktop and tried to import them but get the following message “Sorry, there has been an error.
This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number”

(@artwebster)

I have checked with my FTP client and these files are each 855Kb

I think you may need to post on https://en.forums.wordpress.com/ about this. That sounds like multiple corrupted export files. Did you open any of these files yourself? How did you save them?

I looked at the export file to see why there were no posts and I also looked at the text files because it diod not make sense for them to be in the media library. I used my FTP client to open them since the export file only seemed to contain an image of an opened file.
Each file is shown as 163bytes but with 4.00Kb on the disk.
The files seem to have instructions for their use (as follows) but I have not been able to make them work:-

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″ ?>
<!– This is a WordPress eXtended RSS file generated by WordPress as an export of your site. –>
<!– It contains information about your site’s posts, pages, comments, categories, and other content. –>
<!– You may use this file to transfer that content from one site to another. –>
<!– This file is not intended to serve as a complete backup of your site. –>

<!– To import this information into a WordPress site follow these steps: –>
<!– 1. Log in to that site as an administrator. –>
<!– 2. Go to Tools: Import in the WordPress admin panel. –>
<!– 3. Install the “WordPress” importer from the list. –>
<!– 4. Activate & Run Importer. –>
<!– 5. Upload this file using the form provided on that page. –>
<!– 6. You will first be asked to map the authors in this export file to users –>
<!– on the site. For each author, you may choose to map to an –>
<!– existing user on the site or to create a new user. –>
<!– 7. WordPress will then import each of the posts, pages, comments, categories, etc. –>
<!– contained in this file into your site. –>

<!– generator=”WordPress.com” created=”2012-10-17 14:33″–>
<rss version=”2.0″
xmlns:excerpt=”https://www.ads-software.com/export/1.2/excerpt/”
xmlns:content=”https://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/”

xmlns:dc=”https://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/”
xmlns:wp=”https://www.ads-software.com/export/1.2/”

I used my FTP client to open them since the export file only seemed to contain an image of an opened file.

No – don’t do that. Save the file “as is” on your hard drive and then import it into your self-hosted site.

There doesn’t seem to be any way to do that. If I use the Importer plug in it tells me – “Sorry, there has been an error.
This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number”.

You need to run an export from your wordpress.com site to create a fresh export file.
