I have a wordpress.com site, which has a domain mapped to it (I bought the domain through 123-reg).

I wanted to transfer this site a www.ads-software.com site, as I want more control over the layout and design. I followed the instructions here: https://move.wordpress.com/ and bought a Bluehost hosting package. When I signed up for that, and installed WordPress on it, it asked me for the URL of my site.

But now, when I click the ‘Admin Login’ button, it takes me to my usual wordpress.com dashboard.

I’ve tried logging out, and using the username and password that Bluehost have given me to ‘Access your new WordPress Site’, but the details aren’t recognised.

I’m very frustrated and feel like I’ve wasted my money. What am I doing wrong?

  • All the flush DNS does is clear that DNS record, so the correct DNS will load for your site.

Then you would be able to login to your site admin fine.

OK, it sounds like I ought to wait a couple of days then and see if it resolves itself. Thank you all so much for your help.

Do let us know how it goes. ??

It should resolve a lot sooner.

Your welcome. Report back when you can log into your admin okay.

So, I’ve taken the decision to revert back to WordPress.com.

This whole thing was stressing me out far, far more than it should have done, and I have spent hours and hours messing around with it to no end.

    I have learnt several things:

    1. Going self-hosted is more complicated than it sounds, even if a lot of people tell you it’s a good idea. For what is essentially a portfolio / online CV for a freelancer like me, wordpress.com is by far the easier option.

    2. I am far less technologically competent than I thought I was.

    3. You guys are really helpful. Seriously, I was fully expecting to come on here and get either no response at all, or have a bunch of people tell me that I shouldn’t have tried self-hosting in the first place. Instead, I got some really good advice from some very kind (and patient) people, who have no reason to help a random stranger on the internet, beyond being totally awesome.

I have cancelled my Bluehost account, and am now hoping that https://www.lizbellmedia.co.uk very soon reverts back to what it looked like before. It’s currently a Bluehost holding page, so I’m trying to remain calm until I get my old site back…

    Thanks again, WordPress ninjas.

So sorry to hear that it all got too much for you. In all fairness though, your experience was far worse than the average new WordPress user due to what seems to have been a perfect storm of other issues that made life difficult.

On the plus side, I hope you feel a lot more confident about running your own site in the future. You coped really well given such a steep learning curve.

    Thank you. Perhaps one day!

Its normally not as complicated. Also its not so involved.

Hopefully in the future you go with WordPress self-hosted.

    Hi guys

I have a very similar issue to Liz above at the moment. Moving from wordpress.com to www.ads-software.com for more flexibility and ive spent maybe 2 weeks trying to install www.ads-software.com and getting frustrated.

I have installed manually initially and couldn’t get my web browser to take me to the install screen despite completing all the earlier steps of a wordpress install. Then i installed using Bluehost and now get pointed to wordpress.com still each time. I have renamed by web servers from wordpress.com to bluehost after reading this thread but at this stage still no improvements.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong with either of the above install methods above?
