• I’m running WP 2.8.4 on a MacPro running Snow Leopard with the most recent version of MAMP.

A previous installation lost track of its connection to the MySQL database so I started over.

But I would like to move some of the content from the old installation into the new one.

Could someone tell me the directories/files that contain the contents of posts and pages.

I assume I can read them with something like TextEdit. Is there anyway to export/import into the new installation. One of the pages is an elaborate table of internet bookmarks. I would love to be able to save it.

  • Neither one of these solutions will move just some content – it is all or nothing as all info is stored in the database and not any file

    old blog
    admin – tools – export
    save file to desktop

    new blog
    admin – tools – import
    use file you saved

this gets you your posts, comments, etc.

A more complete solution would be to use phpmyadmin to export the dtaase and import it into the new one

Thanks for the quick reply. But I’m afraid my problem is more serious than that. Because I’m just beginning to work with all this and now find myself unable to get MAMP to work, I can’t access, via the admin pages, the old files.

I had assumed some file in some directory had the contents of a given page/post, just the text. I gather, from what you say, that’s not the case.

And that I might find them in either the word press files directory or in the MySQL file directory. I gather not.

    Nonetheless, thanks again.

Thanks yet again. But that isn’t quite it.

I just keep feeling there have to be files either in the wordpress directory or somewhere in the MAMP directories that contain just the text. Which I could then copy out and paste into a post in the new installation.

Unless you’ve exported the MySQL database in some fashion, there aren’t any files that exist that you can readily copy and paste from. You need access to the old MySQL database in order to get at your data. There really isn’t any other way to go about it.

Thanks. Since the old MySQL database denies me access and that’s the reason I was forced to do a reinstall, I’m, apparently, just out of luck.
