• I’m designing a new site subdomainxxx.eeesafe.com
When it’s done, I want to import the Pages and Posts from eeesafe.com into the subdomain which has a new design. Then I want back it up and restore it to the Main Domain.

How can I ensure that when that’s done, I have all the links and URLs that are contained in posts and pages so that if references on shortlink sites like bit.ly will then still work, as well as clicking on link in post that lead to a page or the converse?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • What state have you reached with the redesign? Are you already finished or are you just about to start?

When I do something like this, the first thing I do is import the data from the original web. That way the URLs are definitely preserved. If you do it later, they should also be preserved – unless you have previously inserted some object (file, product ..) which has already claimed your slug (from which the URL is built) for itself.

So I don’t really see a problem with your approach. My recommendation would still be to take a look at it. Helpful here are plugins that can capture 404 calls (after going live), e.g. this one: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/redirection/

I’ve started it, but I can reset everything because I’ve backed up what I have.
There’s not too much done that can’t be done again. As I’m learning the tools in the new theme and it’s also a Block Theme, so that’s new to me, the I don’t mind starting from scratch.

So are you saying to do a complete Export and then Import and then change the theme and work from there? If I did it that way, would all the links be retained as if it was the home page. I would be importing to the subdomain.eeesafe.com for instance.

I could use one of a few plugins. I’ve got Backly for instance.
I think logically, nothing is going to change on the main site unless I go back there. I’ve not blogged much for a few months any way and I don’t mind this as I will be pushing slowly into growing the engagement anyway. Too much business at first, I couldn’t cope with yet.

I will just do lots of testing on the Sub Domain and I will want to remove some blogs and pages anyway.
My thoughts are if I work through all my blogs that refer to a page and I keep that blog article, will check the page exists. So it can be a systematic thing.

Hope that makes sense. Anything not working I’ll look at that redirection then as well.
