TRANSFERRING SITE TO WORDPRESS

I’m not sure what you are asking — what is the colorado wire and cable site? Is that the new site for your father?

Or where are you hosting the new site (until it is ready to launch)? Or do you intend to develop it locally using MAMP?

BTW, there is no way to “transfer a website over” to WP — you have to start from scratch although you can copy and paste content.

If you mean move a domain name, you have to talk to your host about how to do that — it’s fairly technical from what I understand.

no, i want to host https://www.woodquarters.com … it is hosted through godaddy.com / dreamweaver. can i not develop a site and then transfer it over once finished?? or do i need to buy a domain name to develop and then transfer?

I don’t think you can use a domain name in two places — the live site and a developer one — though you might be able to use a subdomain. Ask GoDaddy about that.

But what I would suggest is using MAMP on your local machine — it basically creates a server/client environment on one computer — and once that is set up it works the same as a remote server.

It takes a bit of set-up, but there is excellent documentation and help in the Codex and the MAMP site. I knew nothing about this and got it going on the first try — believe me I almost fell off my chair when it worked! LOL!

Once you get the site ready to launch and your dad is okay with it, you can simply upload the files to GoDaddy and take down the old site. And bingo, you’ll be live. (At least in theory…) GoDaddy support should be able to help you with that if you need it.

thanks for the help! i have read up on the wordpress forums using MAMP and have gotten to the very end…and get slightly confused https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP at the very end…..do i put in exactly as they describe…? and then what after that?? Once you’ve installed MAMP, you open your browser and use a localhost address (usually localhost:8888 unless you set it to something else) — and then the usual WP admin page appears and you use it the regular way — to install themes, post content, change code, etc.

It’s quite cool.

And BTW, I use it on a Mac running 10.7.3 and Firefox (an absolute must if you don’t already use it).

what is the exact address for the local host. i know i used 8888..do you have somethingi can copy/paste? THANK YOU

localhost:8888

It’s very clearly indicated in the Codex and MAMP instructions. But it’s not the same as an internet URL — the site won’t be viewable except on your computer.

it is being hosted through godaddy.com and i can see all of the FTP Files on the godaddy.com site. However, the person who was previously working with it was doing it through Microsoft FrontPage. I also notice on the side panel of the godaddy site it says i can install wordpress as an “app” i do not want to crash the site..would this make sense to do?
