• Hi all,

i want to start translating my website and i was wondering what the best way of doing this is. I see there are plugins that will do a lot of the work for me but i think translating pages by machines is almost always terrible.

Also all the plugins will let you pay a set price every month, i only need to translate my website once and then maybe some new content once in a while so paying a price per month is not really worth it for me. I also need my products translated.

Any good readings about this subject or tips and tricks on how to go about this a welcome!

Hope you have a great day,

    Sjoerd

  • I agree with you that machine translation may be helpful to understand what a text is about, but it’s certainly not good enough to officially represent a company…

Now. It would be good to be a bit more specific: What do you mean, when you say “translate”?
    1. Do you want to totally change the language of your whole website to a different language? (Say, English).
If yes, then you can change the language setting under Settings-General and then walk through all content and settings and translate it to your new language.

    2. Do you want to create a multi-lingual web site?
2a) If they will have partially different contents, then you might consider setting this up as a totally separate website. … or change your installation to a multisite, and still treat different language versions as separate web sites inside your network install.

2b) If you want a multi-lingual solution, then there are several plugins available to help you, some free, other for money.
I suggest you google for comparison wordpress multilingual plugins and have a good read.
(Oh, there may be some good answers coming up at WP Translation Day on Sep 30 2017, check the program at https://wptranslationday.org/ it should get published within a day or two.)
