    Hi there,
I am using your plugin “very simple contact form”. I have wp 4.5.2 up and running in english, but want the contact form to be translated into german. Therefore I exported german translation into .po/pot format (wp-plugins-very-simple-contact-form-dev-de.po) and put it into >wp-content>plugins>very-simple-contact-form>translation. I just copied that into this folder.
But there is no translation. What is wrong? Where did I do some mistake?
Could you please help with my misunderstanding?

    BR from Germany
    Marco

    Hi Marco,

I have updated / changed this reply.

Plugin will use the language set in dashboard and looks for the translation files in folder /languages. If not available it checks the available language packs and installs that via an update. If not available default fallback is English. But German language pack is available there. Note: simular files in plugin folder /translation will overrule the process described above.

If your dashboard language is set on English you can only display the contactform in German if:

    1) You change the locale of the German po/mo file into en_US (you will loose these files in case of language update). So don’t do this.

    2) You change the contactform labels via short code attributes, check this page for more info.

Why not simply change dashboard language to German?

    Hi Guido,

thanx, but it does not work. The Thing is the following: I set up WP on a local Server for develeping the Website. Therefore I insalled WP in English – I was asked for a Language when installing. I now assume, that german isn’t installed on my wp Installation. Is that the reason for not having a Translation?
Does the plugin uses the “General wp Translation languages”?
Is there no way to just enable the plugin to have it in german?
How can I install just the german language in my Installation? Would this help?

    Hi Marco,

Aha, you are not able to change language via Settings > General?

In that case you should create a folder called ‘translations’ in folder wp-content and add the (unzipped) German Language pack (link).

    This should work (source).

After that, create a folder calles ‘themes’ and ‘plugins’ inside the ‘translation’ folder. That will be the location of the theme and plugin translation files.

this is all strange… i did create a sandbox wp installation. when insalling, i did choose german language pack. so i can change between english and german. after that i insalled your plugin, the site is in german (the backend) but the plugin not.

    Why is that so?

    Hi,

Now you should receive an translation update notice in your dashboard, this contains the language pack of the plugin.

You did choose the regular German, not the German (formal)?

this is so strange – really. I have set up a new wp installation with german language – new database everything. first theme installation, than plugin, set up page, than [contact] on page, the backend is now in german and there: the plugin is still in english. …

got it! for some reason the to language files in the folder
    wp-content>langquages>plugins
    very-simple-contact-form-de_DE.po
    very-simple-contact-form-de_DE.mo

    where missing.

    even, the installation was correct.
So I copied those files into the folder: Works!
Can you explain or should we leave it as it is…

    Hi,

Normally when your dashboard is German and you install a plugin, your cms checks whether a German language pack is available or not. If available, it’s downloaded directly. If a language pack is available later (or in case of an language update), user will receive an update notification in dashboard at the update page. The files are added to folder wp-content > languages > plugins.
