translation text shows in .po file with html in it

  • Hi,
    this is the code in the theme
    <div class="nav-next fr"><?php previous_posts_link( __( 'Newer posts <span class="meta-nav">&rarr;</span>', 'storefront' ) ); ?></div>
    in the translation .po file the string to translate appears as
    Newer posts <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;</span>
    That does not seem right to me?
    Should that html be in there, if not what is wrong with the PHP?
