Translation to fusion and agglutinating languages

Hey Estal,

Could you perhaps provide an example of a phrase that cannot be translated? Here’s one I’m looking at:

Access to "%1$s" is restricted to customers who have previously purchased %2$s.

Then, the variables are replaced with the product name, or strings like:

one or more products from the %s categories

a product from the %s category

What prevents you from translating these fragmented sentences?

We haven’t done much research in internationalization, so I understand there might be certain aspects of it that we failed to take into account when the plugin was written.

I translated the strings to Hungarian, but the results are very unnatural sentences.
These fragments are very confusing in our language.

I’d love to understand more – could you please provide more details about what makes your translation unnatural?

There are great resources on WordPress localization; however, coding best practices are ofter counter to localization best practices. I understand that, in our case, “who have previously purchased” might have a singular + plural form in some languages, but I might be missing something else here.

Writing code that is optimized for localization in every language is not an easy task, and feedback like yours can make a difference in helping developers build products for a wider audience.
