Translations

I don’t have any immediate solutions for this topic, as I’ve never personally attempted things. However, based on my experiences with other plugins, one of the bigger contributing issues is that the messaging is stored as an option in the wp_options table. If there is some way to tell either of those plugins potentially where those are, and if they can work with that, then that may be a way forward. However, I can’t guarantee that that’ll work or is even possible.

Sadly, beyond that, I don’t know what to suggest to help in this case, with the current status of the code, but I’m all ears if any knows how to translate saved options.

What about joining the GoGlobal program from WPML? They help you get this plugin multilingual-ready.

Overall it already pretty well is internationalized, and I know we have a fair amount of .po/.mo files available for some languages.

The proverbial holes are the spots where user input is saved to the database, like the custom messages. It’s that part that I don’t have a great solution for, and it definitely affects more than just this plugin, for items I help develop.

Just came across this post as I was struggling with the exact same problem myself.

I’d suggest a possible solution would be to take advantage of the Buddypress Custom Email feature which would then allow users to edit/translate emails in the same way as other standard Buddypress emails. (I’ve seen other similar plug-ins move over to this way of handling in the last year or so, and actually implemented it myself for one specific scenario… and it seems to work very well.)

Obviously this does require a fair amount of (re)coding to get it to work, and for now, I’ve personally resorted to sending out a single email in multiple languages (quicker but not ideal!) but it’s something I definitely might look into implementing in future if it’s not already in the pipeline elsewhere.

We have it noted and in mind for sure, to migrate to the BuddyPress Email functionality, but we haven’t gotten to that point yet. We’re not regularly developing this plugin at the moment, but definitely aiming to provide as much support as we can when needed.

Apart from the above, and a few tweaks which I’ve added to suit the specific needs of the site I’m currently working on, the plugin is working pretty well for me overall so do appreciate the work you’ve put in already.

If I ever find the time to play around with the Buddypress Custom Emails myself I’ll let you know ??
