• I just noticed my update icon was displaying I had 1 new update. Checked to see what it was and in my WordPress Updates page in the admin area I see “Translations – your translations are all up to date”. I have not seen this before.

Also, my WordPress version shows “If you need to re-install version 5.6.1–en_GB, you can do so here.”

But in my other clean WordPress installation it doesn’t say “en_GB”.

Seems like something has added this to my site, possibly a plugin. I do not have any translation plugins installed and have not seen this before.

Any ideas what I should do?

That just means your site is set to English (UK) at Settings > General in your site’s Dashboard.

To not have any language-specific WordPress, to use the default, choose “English (United States)” there.

@macmanx yes I understand, but I wonder why this was added. I’m worried if it’s some malware. My other wordpress site does not have any of this (as pointed out in my initial post).

Also, in my language folder I have a bunch of Swedish .po/.mo files and json language files. Have no clue why Swedish. I use English WordPress.

It would only have been added if you or another Administrator on the site switched the site’s language to English (UK) at some point.

Hm, I never did. Also, I wonder why Swedish language files were added.

Whatever languages are installed under wp-content/languages/ will be fetched whenever corresponding language packs are available. Perhaps you’ve got Swedish with a one-click install?

If you truly do not how how those were installed, caution is never a bad thing.

Carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures and start backing up your site.

@tobifjellner hm, I have no clue why Swedish. I mean, I am Swedish so in a sense it does make sense, BUT my wordpress install is English and I only use English. Never actively installed anything Swedish related.

@macmanx running a scan as we speak!
