• Hey all –

So I do quite a bit of traveling, and recently created a travel photoblog. I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind swinging by, taking a look, and letting me know your thoughts?

    https://www.ericjonolsen.com/

    Fair warning:

I am years behind on the blogs. Yes, I know, what is the purpose of a blog if I don’t blog? Exactly! So I am trying to get my butt in gear and blog!

The galleries are not set up yet. There are placeholder images there from the theme, and I am leaving them until I decide on which gallery template I want to make universal on the site.

However, functionality wise, the site is up and running!

    Thanks ever so much.

    Happy Travels!
    Eric

    Hotelsilverton,

Thanks much! Yes, I’m currently on a shared server at the moment, and I am uploading ~5GB worth of wiki data to a subdomain – perhaps that is causing slowness?

I have a feeling though it is because I am on a shared server, rather than a dedicated server. In time, that will be changed.

    Thank you again!

    Hotelsilverton –

Thank you for the plugin recommendation!

    Much appreciated ??

    Eric

It froze my browser, holy crap.

After about 3 minutes the menu links were working.

    Get the plugin mentioned above.

    Are photos optimized for web?

    Miroslav,

Thanks for the feedback – weird that you are having that problem, but then again I have fibre coming into my house – perhaps that is why I have had no speed issues?

Come to think of it, the photos are not optimized for web – they are all 7MB photos size (exported from RAW and sized down in Lightroom), however, it was my understanding that WordPress further “crunched” the images?

Out of curiosity Miroslav, when you run a speed test on speedtest.net what is your download rate?

I did try the WP3 cache plugin, however, I found when accessing my site via mobile, I was given an error saying “too many redirects”. When I disabled the plugin, the mobile site worked.

I will look at alternate cache plugins.

Again, thank you for the feedback and I am definitely open to suggestions – I am new to this still!

I usually keep my photos 650 pixels width by whatever appropriate height.
    It’s the web.
Obviously if I am selling a photo, I will send the buyer the full sizd/quality photo.

For the average person you do not need a 7MB photo.

    Miroslav,

Thank you again for your response!

I installed WP Super Cache, and that seems to be helping a bit.

I’m going to go in later tonight and re-upload all my images crunched down to…1MB – or less?

Again, I am new to photography, and new to creating webpages (not new to blogging), so how would you suggest keeping the same width but varying height when exporting in Lightroom, or would you suggest I just crunch all my photos down to a specific size?

    Thanks for your tips!

Update: I took your advice – optimized all photos (except opening screen) for web. Reduced JPEG export quality from 100 to 65, and set an export size that is equal for all images.

Made a HUGE difference in load time of galleries.

    Thank you!

Looks awesome! Love your travel photos ??

    Nice site dude!

Galleries are updated (finally). I’m trying to do 1-2 galleries every day or so.

I’m still behind on blogs ??

Thank you though, everyone, for your feedback – it is much appreciate.d

Essentially your images at around 600px w/h should be no more than 200kb each.

The best method is opening the image in Photoshop and Saving for web.

Also, you can install the plugin smush.it and it will also try compressing images further. Caching only helps once the user has loaded the site once, so really their first visit (and most important) could still be quite slow.

    Great looking site though

I like the design and the pictures! Looks like a nice blog! ??

I love the big dropdown menu under gallery… got a thing for dropdowns.
