Hi. Am trialling this plug-in on several websites.
I require it to send a back-up of the DB (only) to a specified email address.

Have set it up (quite easy to do) and the one-off tests worked. But after a week of running daily back-ups (still testing) I’ve found:

    1. DUPLICATE EMAILS RECEIVED
I’m receiving not one, but two identical backup emails every time (with the same time stamp), containing the back-up SQL file (for each job). I’d prefer just the one, as it will cause disk space issues.

    TIMING ERRATIC
Also, the timing seems erratic (I’m using the Chron option).
On one site the job is set for 4am, daily – but the time stamps have been: 4:52am, 4:32am, 4:25am, 8:57am, 5:40am and 4:41am.

The other 3 test sites are also encountering the same thing. The back-ups seem fine otherwise.

    Any advice appreciated. ??

  • Hi @joshbiz, the timing issue sounds like simply that wp-cron isn’t firing at the proper times. If you don’t have much traffic to your website, then it won’t necessarily be fired exactly at the times you provide.

To get around that, you can call wp-cron from a Linux cronjob, which you can likely set up in your host’s control panel.

For the other issue, are you saying that the backup emails are each coming twice with exactly the same backup?

Thanks for the advice about the cron timing.

Yes, even though I’ve asked for an email to be sent to particular address, I’m getting double each time.

Hi again @joshbiz, just still trying to debug this. Do the double emails come exactly at the same time, or a few minutes apart?

Can you check the logs? Is there only one log for this job, or double of those as well?

The jobs report only one at a time (no duplication). The duplicate backup emails are identical, with the same date and time stamp.

Interestingly, the back-ups for last night didn’t send duplicate emails (so no issue)…

Unfortunately a further issue has since cropped up (whilst checking for the answers to your questions). One of the 4 websites hasn’t run the back-up for the past 2 days. And another website skipped a day. I wonder if this relates to the cron issue you suggested before.

I need my back-ups to be rock solid and the issues experienced so far are unfortunately undermining my confidence to adopt the plug-in for general use. But I fully appreciate your efforts to assist. ??

Hi @joshbiz, if your sites do not have much traffic, I suggest using crontab. Does your host allow you to create cron jobs?

    Hi Brandon,

Leave it with me and I’ll try other cron options as suggested. Yes, these sites are all brand new so probably not receiving much traffic (at all) yet. I’ll investigate.

As for the duplicate emails, this didn’t happen last night so maybe a one off glitch? I’m going to keep the test backups running for a while yet. Let’s see what happens and I’ll report back.

Eventually, they’ll only be weekly back-ups but I’m running daily ones for the time being (for testing purposes).

    Speak again soon.

    All the best,
    Josh.

Hi @joshbiz, did using a manual cronjob fix your issue? Please let us know if there is anything you need, or otherwise mark this topic as resolved.

Sorry Brandon. I’m away on holiday this week but will be looking at this next week.

    Hi Brandon,

The duplicates haven’t happened any more so that’s good news. I’m now exploring alternative options for the cron options. So please consider this closed. Thanks for your help.
