Trouble adding links in Gutenberg

  • So I have not logged onto wordpress much the last few months. And last week started blowing the dust off WordPress again…and holy cow!! I am super confused about this new system.

    The whole Gutenberg thing has really thrown me for a loop. There seems to be lots of kinks that have not been worked out yet, but the most frustrating one right now is links.

    Every time I try to click the add link button, not only will it not allow me to add a link, but my screen goes psychotic and starts doing this weird pulsing/blinking thing that’s tough to describe.

    When I logged in last week I did manage to get the option to add the link up, but it did not have the quick access to old posts that it used to have pre-Gutenberg. I had to manually enter them. And even then they never saved.

    So… #1 – How the heck do I get the link button to work #2 – Is there any way to go back to the old WordPress system or is this whole Gutenberg thing here to stay?

    Hiya,

    This sounds like a plugin or theme conflict more so than anything else (or possibly even a weird browser extension quirk), if you’re up for it you could test without any plugins and a default theme, such as Twenty Nineteen, running? (I understand that’s not always ideal, and if you don’t have a test area for such scenarios, the Health Check plugin has a Troubleshooting Mode which lets you do this only for your user without affecting site visitors).

    As for going back, we do offer an opt-out of the new editing experience via the Classic Editor plugin for those that need it, but of course we would much rather try to get people situated properly with the new one whenever possible.

    I can’t add links now either. My screen doesn’t go wonky. It just seems to accept the link until I click ok to open it in a new new tab. When I do that, the page refreshes and the link I just added is gone. This just started with the Gutenberg update.

    By the way thank you for the Classic Editor recommendation. It fixed the above problem and as I don’t have the time to “get situated properly” right now (beating a deadline and this Gutenberg update has resulted in more than doubling the amount of time and work I have to put into creating a post), I’m grateful for this workaround.

    I also cannot add links. The toolbar at the top of the text editor where you have all the buttons (add link, bold, italic, underline etc etc) doesn’t scroll with the page so to add a link I need to highlight the text, then scroll all the way up to to the top, click the add link button, then scroll all the way down to the text again, and when I click Add link it doesn’t actually work most of the time.

    Seems like a pretty basic function that the toolbar would be fixed to the top of the editor so you don’t need to constantly scroll up and down to use it. I think I’ll opt out until WP has had more time to iron out all these kinks.

    I was just about to add another post because this morning I couldn’t even get posts to save. But then added the Classic Editor plugin and everything’s working just fine and dandy again.

    May give Gutenberg a chance at some point in the future when all the kinks are worked out, but as of now it’s just too headache inducing.

    I just gave up on gutenberg after 2 weeks of aggravation. As the others mentioned, adding links is an exercise in futility! I highlight, click the link button, the highlight disappears, and no link happens. UGH!

    The interface is clunky and not user-friendly. I’m back on the classic editor.
