When I try to edit a page on my site, I cannot see the “text” version of the page. I can only see the “visual” version. I have tried deactivating all plug-ins and also reinstalling WP 3.9.1

I just noticed this problem today (7/16), and I had been able to use the “text” versions of the pages for some editing within the past few days.

    Thanks for sharing.

I went through the step-by-step, and sometimes I could access the “text” edit page . . . but then I would log off and log back on . . . and then couldn’t see the page again.

Today, I have had access each time I have logged on.

I’m not sure why today is consistently okay, but things seem to be working now.

    Thanks again!

Ok. Now the problems are back . . . and worse than ever. Sometime yesterday, I lost access to the “visual” edit page. All I can see is the “text” page, and it even looks different than it has in the past. Everything is now completely “run together”. There are no spaces between paragraphs like there used to be.

I have tried everything and nothing seems to help.

The biggest problem is, I’m pretty much a novice. However, I had figured out things for designing my website pretty well using a combination of the “visual” and “text” edit page.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Was it working before and if so, have you updated or added anything recently? The WP auto update can cause problems so you might want to try manually reinstalling from a fresh download.

My website (educationsmanyfaces.com) is still fine. The problem is with the WP “visual” and “text” edit pages when I’m logged in through my web hosting service.

Yesterday (7/19) morning, I was able to see both the visual and text edit pages just fine. The only thing I did was to add the Chapter 12 purchase button on the last page in the menu. I’ve done that same thing for all the other chapters without any problems at all.

When I was going to try and do some other things in the afternoon, the edit page problems were all there when I logged on to my account.

I don’t know how to code, so I really need the visual edit page. I have been able to copy&paste some things this afternoon on the new and strange-looking text edit pages, and that seems to have worked when I look at the website to check all of my changes.

I’m not sure how to manually reinstall WP. I really am a novice, and I’ve only updated WP when my dashboard indicates that there is an update available.

If you’ve tried a default theme with all plug ins deactivated, you really have to rule out a corrupted installation. Here’s the install guide:

I’ve had an interesting day. 10+ hours chatting or on the phone with Bluehost support to try and figure out the problem.

I was ready to start the new installation, and I decided to make one more call to BH. This person was amazing, and he was able to access BOTH the “visual” and “text” edit pages on his computer. While he was switching from one to the other successfully, I was stuck in my “one giant paragraph” “text” edit page on my computer.

He had some ideas and said to definitely not start over on my website or do anything with WP 3.9.1 I’ve tried his ideas (other browsers, disabling my virus protection, uninstalling my virus protection, checking on my other computer, etc.) and none of them seem to make a difference with the “text” edit functionality.

I called my son in another part of town and gave him my logon info. He was able to see both “visual” and “text” pages without any problem at all. While I was talking to him on the phone, I logged off my WP and logged on again. I was able to see the “visual” edit page . . . but now I’m stuck on that. I can’t access the “text” edit page.

Any other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Apparently my WP edit functionality is great for everyone except me?

If you use Internet Explorer, try resetting it from tools ? intenet options. At least you sort of know it’s a local problem.

I agree that it is most likely some kind of local problem. And, now I’m back to being stuck in the one-big-paragraph “text” version of the edit page. It just changed in the last hour.

Someone out there has to know how to fix this.

I think it could be a “setting” somewhere. Both of my computers are pretty new Macs (about a year old), and were both bought through MacMall. They installed some things on them for me, so maybe that installation process involved some “setting” in the system preferences.

My son has now tried the WP logon to my website from home and work with both Mac and PC, and he can see both edit pages just fine. He doesn’t have to do anything to make the edit functions work other than just logon.

    Frustrating . . . but also challenging!

This is the error message I get when trying to switch from “visual” to “text” editor:

ReferenceError: Can’t find variable: switchEditors post.php:275:143

Anyone have any ideas on what needs to be done?

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned here yet, try switching to the Twenty Fourteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

If that doesn’t do anything, perhaps it really is limited to your browser.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date by visiting https://whatbrowser.org/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

Yeah, all that was suggested in the link I posted above and also here:

If you’ve tried a default theme with all plug ins deactivated, you really have to rule out a corrupted installation

If it’s working for others it has to be a browser/os issue. Can you try it with say Firefox?
If you want someone here to look at it, we’d just have to get an id/pw sent via email.

I tried the Twenty Fourteen activation.

    I disabled all plugins.

I have tried Safari (6.1.5), Firefox (31.0), Chrome (36.0.1985.125), and even Explorer (using parallels on my Mac).

My browsers are all up to date.

I have cleaned out the cache and cookies so many times.

I don’t have any extensions or add-ons at all on Firefox and Chrome since I don’t use them.

I’m still having trouble, however, my son (on 3 different computers and also at his work) and the tech support person at BH have not had any trouble. They can access both the visual and text editors without any trouble at all.

Both of my Macs (laptop and desktop) are both only about a year old.

Hm, so it’s definitely limited to just your computer. Which version of OS X are you running, and do you have any sort of system-wide third-party security app/suite running?

    Thread Starter emanuel39

    (@emanuel39)

It seems to be limited to both of my computers and also my wife’s iPad and on both of our iPhones. I don’t particularly care if the WP edit function works on the iPad or on the phones, but I have checked everything we own.

    I have a iMac 21.5″ and am running 10.8.5

    I have a 13.3″ MacBook Pro running 10.9.4

I had Norton security on both of them, but I uninstalled it on the MacBook over the weekend to see if it was the problem. I uninstalled it and got rid of everything on the computer that was either Norton or Symantec. That didn’t help.

My son has a Mac laptop, and some kind of PC that he built himself just a few months ago. It works on both of those and also on his computer at work. It also worked for both of the Bluehost tech people I’ve talked to over the past several days (I don’t know what kind of computers they were using, but one of them was using Firefox, and the other one was using Chrome).

I’ve gone to a couple of places with WiFi over the weekend with my MacBook, and I still have the same problems.

    My internet provider is XFINITY.

I have tried almost everything . . . except the thing that will fix this.

This is the error I get whenever I try to use the edit tab that isn’t being displayed in the edit page mode:

ReferenceError: Can’t find variable: switchEditors post.php:275:143
