Trouble since multisite conversion

We recently converted a site to multisite and there is some funkiness with the existing roles.

When we view roles the existing roles in the the All tab has 0 and the Has Users is the only one that displays any roles. None of the roles are editable since the conversion.

In addition when were tried to add a new role we receive the following notice.

‘The requested role to edit does not exist.’

Finally in the edit users page there used to be a list of roles w/ check boxes to assign multiple roles and that has disappeared.
