Trouble with Permalinks..

I have permalinks for my static pages in the form https://mydomain.com/pagename/

My problem is that if I enter a URL such as https://mydomain.com/pagename.php I get a page returned containing the content of all my pages concatenated !

This is particularly a problem as I created my theme from my website and I still have old links out there in cyberspace to .php pages.
