My husband checked the hosting and its okay…

That appears to be an HTTP 500 error. By any chance, did you back your site up before updating?

I didn’t back up first. Likely to be gone?

Probably not gone. Can you ask your host how to look at the error logs for the server?

Or you can start by renaming the plugins folder using FTP or Cpanel:

    wp-content
         pluginsHOLD

If that does not work, rename your current theme

    wp-content
        themes
whatever your current theme is HOLD

We tried the above suggestions, renaming the plugins folder and a few other things and still no resolution.

We are rusty on the lingo so pretty steep learning curve on troubleshooting.

    Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php
