• Hello everyone,

I’m trying to troubleshoot a Gravatar issue I’m having on my site.

    Story:

I migrated one blog of mine into a new, clean and spiffy WP install (self hosted, empty until I migrated the old material into it, 3.7.1).

All the content is there, all the comments are there. Everything works (media, search, categories, archives, commenting, posting, etc.)

I installed the Ryu theme, but also tested the following problem with the default Twenty Thirteen theme.

    Problem:

I was under the impression that when I comment on my site with my email address, the gravatar image associated with that email address is pulled “on demand” so to speak from gravatar.com and not stored anywhere. Is that correct?

This IS the case for all new comments I myself place in my (now) new blog, but NOT ALWAYS the case for the imported material from the old blog. Sometimes it is shown, sometimes not (but once was).

Most of the time, the default gravatar (Mystery Man) set in “discussion” is shown as if I was a “guest” without a gravatar on my own site.

What I have tried to do to fix that:

Emptied cache, tried in different browsers (two of them new installs (Chrome, Opera).

    Tried on a different machine.

Went into those comments that aren’t showing my avatar and checked the mail address (accurate), deleted the info and reentered it.

Went into the database via phpMyAdmin and checked the comments table for correct name, correct mail address, correct site. Everything is identical.

Deactivated all plugins and tried all of the above again, also after switching between Ryu and Twenty Thirteen.

    Not a single attempt helped.

    What’s shown:

I am admin of the site and all the examples below use the same name, the same email address and the same site. I checked this so many times that I am absolutely positive. I even asked others to check letter by letter.

My admin bar inside of the WP admin shows the correct avatar.
When I right-click it to view the image, this link is shown:
    https://0.gravatar.com/avatar/ecc7dad4558cbc0f049fb92cf2bb259f?s=16&d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&r=G

On many comments that have the same name/address/site it’s the following image link (default grey gravatar):
    https://0.gravatar.com/avatar/ad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536?s=74

For SOME older comments where the correct gravatar is shown for some reason (same name, same address, same site), I get this link:
    https://0.gravatar.com/avatar/ecc7dad4558cbc0f049fb92cf2bb259f?s=74&d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D74&r=G

P.S.: I don’t know how to post a screenshot here (which is also not of much use since I blurred the mail info), but I prepared one from my WP admin comments page where I have two comments from myself below each other. They are completely identical with name, mail and site information (the comment content is different) and they both show up on the site.

But already in the admin, one shows the correct Gravatar image (it’s also used here on this site) the other one the “Mystery Man” one.

[ Please do not bump, that’s not permitted here. ]

The two Gravatars that are the same image but different sizes are being displayed correctly. The “s=16” and “s=74” parts of the file URL are creating the different sizes.

The default grey Gravatar is being displayed because there’s not a matching Gravatar registered email address. I know you say you’ve checked and the email addresses identical, but clearly not to Gravatar.

So, why is that? Maybe there’s a space in the email address, maybe a line-break, perhaps one letter is a capital or a 1 instead of an l. Maybe some weird character encoding that’s not apparent to the naked eye.

It could be anything but there is definitely a difference somewhere.

    Thanks for your help!

I know what you mean, and I tested it a thousand times, but … no. No typo, no space, no difference in letters.

There’s an easy way to check. I just copied the address over from my gravatar profile and pasted it into an old comment that won’t show the gravatar … same problem. The correct gravatar won’t show.

If I then post a new comment (logged in or logged out) and paste that same address in there, the avatar shows.

    Weird, isn’t it?

Update: On those (old) comments that do NOT show the correct gravatar image, none of my four mail addresses that all have the same gravatar image work.

It is baffeling, to say the least.

What I’m wondering is the following: could there be any old plugin data in the database that I imported that could be blocking the correct display for these old posts? I did play around with at least one avatar/gravatar plugin on the old site, ages ago.
