Trying to get widgets displayed in my custom theme…

Hi. I’m making a custom theme for a friend and am trying to get the widgets to display in the side bar [specifically a twitter one], but whenever i add widgets the footer either shows up in the sidebar div or completely disappears. I’m a beginner and am just … lost. Tried to do a google search on sidebars and got tons of confusing results I’m not sure are even relevant. I’d be extremely grateful to anyone who could help me. Thank you!
