I’ve been trying to resolve connecting SiteKit on a client website. It was on it before from a marketing woman who is now long gone (and not on good terms) but the plugin didn’t appear setup. I had originally built the website. I eventually gave up trying to get access to the previous GA so just started a fresh as they were running ads and we badly needed to have analytics in place.

I uninstalled Site kit before Christmas when I was setting up the new GA and reinstalled it recently but I cannot connect it. I am getting this error when I click on the Sign in with Google button.

The request to the authentication proxy has failed with an error: invalid ‘site_id’ or ‘site_secret’

I found this post which suggests the issue maybe because it was setup and accessed by the marketing woman who we have no contact with now but it was disconnected / looked like it wasn’t setup when I took over the website again.
    Ref: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/invalid-site_id-or-site_secret-2/
    and that refs this:
    https://sitekit.withgoogle.com/documentation/using-site-kit/reset/

I can’t sign in so I am really stuck. I can’t get past here.

Can someone please tell me how on earth to get to the settings to reset? I have the dashboard only because I can’t get past The Sign in with Google, this is where the error is happening.

There is a 500 error in the console if that is any help but I have no idea why the server would only block on this website and none of my others. I have run a health check and still doesn’t work with everything off. Also I use the same theme, basic plugins and hosting on all my websites for quality standards. So I am stumped

    All help very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Emer

    Hi there Emer,

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry to hear of your experience with another contact setting up the plugin previously.

Based on your screenshot and description, it sounds like you did perform a reset however you can’t get past the “Checking compatibility” stage? If this is correct, let’s first of all rule out any third party plugins impacting set up. To do so, please follow the steps below:

    1. Login to your live site from a Chrome browser incognito window.
    2. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    3. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    4. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google“.
    5. Attempt to setup Site Kit once more.

If the same occurs (ie. It remains in a loading state on the “Checking compatibility” screen), please share your Site Health information and we can investigate this further. You can also include any browser console errors within the same form when sharing. This may provide insights into the 500 error you reported.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

Hi James and thanks so much for the quick response.
I had already run the health check and still doesn’t work. I get no error on the screen from the compatibility check, just disappears so it is when I click on the Sign in button at that point, it goes to the error. There are a few errors in the console during the compatibility check.

SCORE!!!! It was actually still failing after going through all those steps you gave but when I went under tools to get the Site Health data, there was an option there to Reset SiteKit so I decided to give it a go (Reset / reboot solves soooo much!) and seems to have cleared it. YAY! I am on to the login screen now anyway and past this error. I will leave this in case someone else gets stuck on the same thing.

I need to wait until Monday to talk to the Google ads guy to see if I can connect it fully as it is gone 7pm here on a Friday so I am not going to get him now.

Quick question as I have only just started using Site Kit recently and most of my client websites just have Google Analytics and Search Console setup, they don’t do ads. I know SiteKit checks GA and GSC but what about GTM?. This website, we have code for Google Tag manager in the Headers and Footer plugin. Can this be handled by Site Kit? And remove from the Header & Footer plugin? (Google TM team added the code through me as requested from the Google Ads team so it was slightly out of my control).

I do have the accounts all connected on GA (GTM and GAds).

Thanks in advance James and no rush, it is the weekend after all.

Many thanks for the update @emcgal, and glad to hear that a reset did allow you to proceed with set up successfully.

Site Kit does had Tag Manager integrated, and it will recognize a non Site Kit placed Tag Manager snippet when connecting the module within Site Kit. At that point you can choose to connect the same Tag Manager account via Site Kit if you wish, or connect a different Tag Manager account. In other words, you can continue to use Tag Manager as placed via your Headers and Footers plugin, or you can use Site Kit to insert the Tag Manager container ID for you if you wish.

Let me know if you have any further questions with the above. If not, I’ll go ahead and close this support topic. Thank you!

    Thanks again James.

I will try to get it all in SiteKit. I am a fan of minimal and everything in one place. I will leave live for now until we are ready to add the new version of the website so the Google ads guy as minimal disruption.
