Trying to run installer.php and getting ??

I just uploaded my site to my server and tried to run the installer.php file and it returns ?? in the top left hand corner. Everything worked fine on my local dev server. I uploaded a previous version of my site that was running on my host and the installer.php ran fine. Would the different versions of php cause the issue? On my dev server I am running v7.1.5 and my webhost is running 5.3.23.
