• Under the discussion settings, there is a box under the section “Other Comment Settings” labeled “Automatically close comments on articles older than”.

I keep ticking the box so there is NO check mark. I want to have comments enabled for all of my posts.

However, after a week or so it automatically gets checked and no one can leave a comment.

I have even tried setting the days to a very high number but it still keeps getting reset to 28 days and the box being checked.

How do I make it so this box if unchecked at all times?

    Thank you

  • Anyone hear anything back from Bluehost? It keeps happening on one of our client’s sites – and we haven’t made any changes to the site in a couple of weeks and it just magically turned itself back on again (auto close after 28 days).

We are also facing the same problem. We are on Bluehost for almost 4 years now. Magic number 28 days turns on automatically on random day. One crude solution till Bluehost fix this. If the 28 days settings changes on the same day for everyone then we should start a email group ’28 days horror’ to notify all the group members.

@karchetan, good idea. I’ll try to check daily and will report here when it happens again. Interested in seeing if it hits everyone on the same day!

Just checked our site we were having issues with and comments are turned off/defaulted to the 28 days again…. Can everyone check to see if theirs got turned off too? I know I checked Monday to see if they were off – and they were still on – but I can’t remember if I checked yesterday….

Mine is fine today, and I haven’t had to reset it in at least a couple weeks.

@abrenes Ours is fine since last 3 days.

I had to reset mine about a week ago.

Mine randomly reset today or late last night. I am perplexed by this and always randomly discover it. The first time was super frustrating since I didn’t know it was happening and how to turn on comments and keep them on.

Im also on Bluehost and agree that they can be tough to work with.

I just checked our customer’s site (whom I had to turn back on commenting a couple of days ago) and it hasn’t reverted back yet. This customer is on the ‘Plus Hosting’ account type (a shared hosting package).

I have five sites on Bluehost and have been having the same problem.

They were all OK at the beginning of the week, all set at 9999 days but with the option not ticked, and I just checked them now, and two have dropped back to 28 days, and are now ticked and activated. Something changed them, but not me.

I might try ticking the box and using 9999 days, and see if it changes to 28 days.

Just checked today (I think the last time I checked was Thursday or Friday of last week) – and it reverted back to checked and 28 days. I had it unchecked and 9999 days entered – but it still went back to default.

What type of hosting plan is everyone on? This client is on the ‘Shared Plus’ account. I have a feeling the reason we might be getting random reverting back times is because of the hosting account type – and depending on the server that the hosting account is on and when they do updates/upgrades to them and depending on when they are done – that is why we all aren’t seeing it on the same day…..

From my 5 sites, the two that dropped back to 28 days just 3-4 days ago, have again dropped back to being 28 days and ticked. I had set those two at 9999 days and ticked.

So, 3 of my sites haven’t changed in that same period, and I have those set at 9999 days, and not ticked.

I’ll check again each day, I think.

All five sites are on a single Bluehost Shared Plus plan.

I saw one site that mentioned checking plugins, so I checked which of mine are common with the two sites that defaulted yesterday.

Out of my five sites, and the two that defaulted back to turn off comments yesterday, the plugins that were common to those two defaulting sites, and not used on the three that haven’t defaulted (yet) are:

    Simple Lightbox Version 2.6.0
    User Submitted Posts Version 20180323

Does anyone else with the problem have those plugins, or not have them.

It can’t be the theme, my two bad sites are:
WordPress 4.9.4 running Twenty Fifteen theme.
WordPress 4.9.4 running Graphene Child theme.

I am also on the Shared Plus hosting plan with Bluehost. My checkbox hasn’t reset in a surprisingly long time. Will report back if it does.

@abcdiamond, I do not have either of the plugins you stated as being common across your sites, so I don’t think it has anything to do with those.
