Tweaking excerpt content

As my blog articles tends to be long and full of screenshots (mainly how-to articles) I’ve recently figured out how to update the index.php of my theme to use the _excerpt instead of the_content. this looks cleaner but too plain for my tastes. https://blog.schertz.name
Is there a way I can extend the amount of text shown as well as integrate some of my plugins into the excerpt as well (e.g. make the Tweetmeme icon display)?
