Twenty-Eleven 1,6 wastes space

I updated my theme, twenty-eleven, to 1.6 from 1.4. I am disappointed: the new theme forces waste space around the actual web page content. The space is grey and useless, and cannot be ‘squeezed out’. Since websites are visited on various devices, some with small screens, wasting screen space seems silly, if not ridiculous.
Please either a) provide me with a fix for this, or b) tell me how to revert to theme twenty-eleven 1.4.
(I’ve looked at later themes, and don’t see that they make my blog/website any better: I’ve done the ‘try and see’ with 2012 et cetera and don’t appreciate any advantage.)
Again, please either
– get rid of the wasted grey space around my website’s pages’ content
or
– give me a way to revert to 2011 1.4 (which does not waste screen space.)
