Here I am, trying to help a friend, I get the site looking beautiful, and BOOM! All that will show now is this annoying line.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘, expecting T_FUNCTION in /home/content/54/6710254/html/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/inc/widgets.php on line 18

So I did what anybody would recommend. I replaced the widgets.php with a fresh, new copy directly off wordpress.

The syntax error is still there!!!!

Here is the last code I saved to the widgets.php file.

[ please use pastebin.com for pasting more than ten lines of code ]

I would greatly appreciate any ideas, and quickly.

Like I said, all I’m trying to do is help a friend. I work with websites everyday, I’m not a coder, php is unfamiliar to me, so please keep that in mind. I’m ok with HTML and CSS.

There’s no point in including the code from the theme file as everyone has access to that and as it is a default theme, it is unlikely to be the cause of your issue – unless you have edited the code, but you say you’re using a new copy of the file – are all of the other theme files the latest version?

The issue is more likely to be with one of your installed plugins. To troubleshoot whether this is the case and if so indicate which plugin is causing it: deactivate all plugins & check the site – if the issue goes away then reactivate the plugins one by one checking the site after each one until the issue comes back.

    Hey thanks!

    I actually found a solution.

Upload a new, unchanged .php file via ftp. The site was back online instantly!

Thanks for the pointer about what to post.
