twenty eleven different background color for sidebar

    I have an interesting problem, hoping to get some feedback. Using the Twenty Eleven theme, I need the sidebar to have a different background color and padding than is being used in the footer. I mention the footer because when adjusting the .widget rules to modify the background it changes the sidebar and the footer. I removed the background color so the widget CSS reads:
    .widget-area {
    font-size: 12px;
    width: 100%;
    margin: 0;
    }
    .widget {
    clear: both;
    margin: 0 0 0 0;
    }

    However I still need to set a background color and padding that will not affect the current footer.
