Hi folks. I updated Twenty Eleven just now, and when I tried to open my blog received the following message:

Warning: require(/home/boomtown/www/www/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/inc/theme-options.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/boomtown/www/www/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/functions.php on line 86

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/home/boomtown/www/www/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/inc/theme-options.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/php53/lib/php’) in /home/boomtown/www/www/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/functions.php on line 86

I have no idea what the above means, or how to fix whatever the problem is. If anyone can assist, would be most grateful.

    Cheers
    Ross

  • Ross,

You might want to remove your Twenty Eleven theme and then install a fresh version. If you made any customizations, please be sure to keep a copy.

    Thanks for your response, schulte.

In the meantime, I went into my ISP CP and restored the files to yesterday. All was working fine.

On the advice of my ISP Support, I then restored the DB to yesterday – and lost my most recent post!

Then I tried updating the Twenty Eleven theme again, and now the blog has crashed, with the same message as before.

NB: I am using a Twenty Eleven child theme.

So, do you think I should restore my files and DB again, then remove the Twenty Eleven theme and install is afresh? I’m concerned that every time I update it I will crash my blog – and lose recent posts!

    Cheers
    Ross

Instead of using the Twenty Eleven child theme, does your blog work with just Twenty Eleven (albeit without your child theme customizations)?

You’ll always miss that recent post if you’re restoring from an old backup.

I have had exactly the same problem with Twenty Eleven after the last update. I run 40+ sites, and five of them runs a child theme of Twenty Eleven. All five failed with the same error on the error_log.

Inspectiing the folder thriogh FTP or a file manger at the host revealed that very few of the files and subfolders were present. When the inc subfolder is missing and functions.php exists there will be a fatal error.

Downloading Twenty Eleven, extracting and uploading through FTP fixed it.

Is there a WordPress bug here?

    Where hosted?

    Interesting!

You would have to reproduce it. This sound about right?

    Install Twenty Eleven 2.0.
    Create Twenty Eleven Child theme.
Run update for Twenty Eleven 2.1.
    See if it breaks.

Can confirm I hit the same issue on an upgrade of the Twenty Eleven theme without a child theme. After the upgrade the twentyeleven folder only had a few files in it. No indication of a timeout or error in the log.

Thanks for your responses, folks. Interesting that others have had similar problems updating Twenty Eleven.

WPYogi, hi! My host is ICD Soft. One of the Supprt guys has now uninstalled Twenty Eleven and reinstalled a fresh version, and all seems OK now.

So, looks like I just need to get busy on re-doing that recent post.

    Cheers!

Hi to you too! Glad to hear it’s fixed. Sounds like maybe some number of default themes were faulty.

Hello, we’re very sorry about this issue. Please download a fresh copy of the theme and it will be fine. One of the servers had an incomplete copy of the theme, and if you happened to update to that, then you could have had this problem. The issue has been fixed, all the servers have been checked, and the complete theme is fine now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

No worries, Samuel, and thanks for the update on the update!
