• Hello my site is nettleague.org and I was moving right along making my site. When I look at my site in Explorer, looks great on my mac…look at it on my PC…its a mess…Firefox on my mac and PC a mess..there are errors all over the page. I’ve checked out the different messages on here…and cannot find a “solution”. I am not a coder…I do have widgets on my site…is this the cause? Is there a plug in that can help me? I saw someone note that I should “validate” my content? Can someone take a look at my site and offer some assitance…I’ve cleared my history…saw that somewhere in here…that did not do anything.

Thank you for your assistance. Kelly

  • Have you attempted to edit the theme in any way?.

No, I have not edited the theme. I have a child theme, there is nothing in the theme..just a “simple child theme” nothing more. And, I have had that on there since I downloaded this theme and it has been fine.

What happens if you switch to the original parent theme? Or deactivate all plugins?

When I switch to the original parent theme, all my widgets that i had loaded on there are not there anymore. I had the j-short codes on there so that I could add boxes and buttons ect…but there is still an entire row of the word “preferences” down one side of the page in firefox…and the front page is really long. In safari it looks fine on my mac, however on PC in safari it does not. ??

I deactivated all plug ins on the site…still in the parent theme and it is STILL not looking right in Firefox? I am running the latest version of firefox…checked Chrome too and same thing..words running down the left side of page “preferences” but it all looks fine on my mac in explorer…however on mac in firefox it looks the same?

The original, unedited, Twenty Eleven theme works just fine for me in Firefox 18, IE9, Chrome, Opera and Safari. Try re-uploading a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Eleven folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

If the problems persist, then I can can only guess that the issue with within your content itself. Are you adding mark-up to your content? Or pasting in content from elsewhere?

Ok,so I am not a “professional” on here by any means…but I think I understand this: I use godaddy. So I will deactivate this theme. Then upload this theme as an “original” and start from scratch? will I loose all the information I have on my site? Yes, I did paste content into this site, just “verbage”…conent… When you ask “mark-up” your content…what does that mean exactly?
    Thank you for your assistance!

So I will deactivate this theme.

You do not need to deactivate the theme to upload a fresh copy.

will I loose all the information I have on my site?
No. All of your content is in your database.

I did paste content into this site, just “verbage”…conent… When you ask “mark-up” your content…what does that mean exactly?

Where did you paste this content from? You may have copied the formatting in the original content into your WP site – thus breaking the site’s display.

I pasted info into the site from an email and I also copied and pasted from j-shortcodes (the code to make a box and a button) widget that I was using on the site.

How do I upload a fresh copy of the twenty eleven theme? just upload it into themes? Then add my child theme to this?

Pasting content in from anything other than a text editor can cause problems.

One trick is to first paste the content into a text editor (like Notepad) and then copy it from the text editor into WordPress. You may have to go back through your posts doing this to remove all of the formatting in your older Posts.

How do I upload a fresh copy of the twenty eleven theme? just upload it into themes?

Yes – into wp-content/themes. You shouldn’t have to touch your child theme – unless it has problems of its own, of course,.

Ok, I uploaded that into the wp-content/themes…when I uploaded this it said “destination” wp-content and this is what it looks like. on this zip file it says “acrhived file”. Is this correct?

No – you have to unpack the downloaded zip file and upload the twentyeleven folder to wp-content/themes.

    Thread Starter Nettleague

    (@nettleague)

can you tell me how to unpack it?

    Thread Starter Nettleague

    (@nettleague)

is that the unarchive? then it asks me a destination…then I type in wp-content/theme?

How do you normally deal with .zip files on your own computer?
