[twenty fourteen] Thumbnail in posts without a featured image

I would like to include a thumbnail image with my posts but I don’t want that giant featured image in twenty fourteen. What I want is when the excerpt show up elsewhere, for it to have a small image featured. But I do not want that large 675×342 image in the post itself.

How does one do this?
