Twenty twelve and Google verification

I’m trying to put in a Google verification code in my header php and I’m putting it in right above </head>. Webmaster tools said they were unable to find it. Not sure if my coding was correct so I deleted it. Don’t want to use plug ins if possible.
I’m new to WP so I have some other questions but this one is most important to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
