There are two types of implementation in this plugin, one works with the archives/taxonomies and the other works with the pages. Your requirement seems related to the static pages and the content editor thing so you are asking about the shortcodes. so there jQuery/JS method will work. The only limitation you would face using jQuery based shortcode, you cannot use the numeric pagination with the alphabetic pagination, it means you have to display all of the result-set/items at once on the page and this plugin will filter those results as per the alphabet selected. I am sorry, there is no test version available for the pro version but you can reach the author through slack so he can schedule a meeting with you answer your questions better.
