    I have a critical error message after trying different themes out this morning. This happened when I was “trying on” the twentytwentyone theme with my WOOtheme, Freshnews. I went through the debugging process in my wp-config PHP file, and the summary I got was of three log errors, two with the theme twentytwentyone and one with the plugin wp likes. I disabled the wp likes plugin so that error has disappeared. I thought maybe if i could change the theme in my cpanel as well, I might be able to get into my back end again, and from there I would just delete the theme and plugin and I would be good to go. I was unable to do this, because I could not find any of my currently installed themes anywhere in my PHP ADMIN in the cpanel. So, all I want to do is get into my dashboard again without having to pay another hundred for Codeable support. The following is an error log (one of 35 pages of the same message, over & over. I don’t know why it does that; give you a gazillion duplicate error messages but I am already way out of my comfort zone). Anyway, it looks as though there are two separate errors. Here goes and hope this is all you need:

    “[01-Feb-2021 02:54:19 UTC] PHP Warning: require_once(/home2/hoofstep/public_html/wp-content/themes/freshnews/functions/admin-theme-page.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home2/hoofstep/public_html/wp-content/themes/freshnews/functions.php on line 18
    [01-Feb-2021 02:54:19 UTC] PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required ‘/home2/hoofstep/public_html/wp-content/themes/freshnews/functions/admin-theme-page.php’ (include_path=’.:/opt/cpanel/ea-php74/root/usr/share/pear’) in /home2/hoofstep/public_html/wp-content/themes/freshnews/functions.php on line 18” (quotation marks are mine >> ??

    P.S. I am running the newest php version. My site is with hostgator.

  • Hi,
    I have encountered the same problem at my local, but mine was just coming from my plugins.
    I suggest you copy all of your plugins to somewhere in your local check if that works and then check one by one which is causing the issue by pasting it back.

    Hope this was helpful.
    Thank You

    the error is caused by the ‘freshnews’ theme;
    if you have access via cpanel, try to rename the theme’s folder to something else; this should in theory activate the default theme and allow you to access the dashboard.

    The error log you posted indicates your freshnews themes is the error.

    Access to your Dashboard’s Appearance page, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename or delete the directory of freshnews themes.

    Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme (Twenty Twenty, etc.). That will force your site to use it.

    Thank you, T-P; this reply helped best to resolve my issue.
    I found the directory and renamed it, and this recovered my login page and all other functions. This led to a couple of questions, though, to anyone in this thread…if you don’t mind me asking:
    1) so, if I delete the folder “freshnews”, it will not otherwise affect the functioning of my website? I know this seems elementary, but I AM NOT so technically inclined that I can see why or why not. It seems to me that, if “forcing a stop” in an app on one’s phone may cause other apps to malfunction, then it follows that deleting a folder – any folder – may cause other elements of the website to malfunction.
    2) Years ago, I purchased a WOO theme for about 100 bucks. What is the difference between purchased themes (like from WOO themes) and the free ones? Does it have to do with back-end functionality? I don’t even know why I did this except it was a suggestion from a Network Marketing pro.
    3) I like this DIVI from elegantthemes.com. I really need a drag-and-drop theme. But before I lay out my bucks, I think I would like to try a free drag-and-drop theme to get used to how to build. Any suggestions for one I could use for a few months? And finally, IF THIS IS THE WRONG PLACE TO POST THESE OTHER QUESTIONS, please someone inform me. I will look for a separate forum and re-post there. Then I will mark this as resolved. advence, everyone.
