twitter not counting when sharing post

All of my social feeds work properly, but twitter is not counting up when I share it. It does share sucessfully though. I am a php developer so I understand code, just looking for some info on how the counting process is being done and saved so I know where to look in the source code.

based on the other share tags, the counting appears to be done after submitting to twitter. So is this information coming from twitter through api is the counter being processed and stored on through the plugin?
