Yoast SEO stores the Twitter username without the leading @ symbol. The plugin appends the @ symbol when creating meta data. Meta data does not cause links the above one.

That link is output as part of the theme’s author data that is output on the front end of the site. The theme or another plugin could be interacting with the social profile.

Just to be sure, we would like to rule out any plugin or theme conflicts that may occur. The fastest way to do this is to?deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme?like?Twenty Nineteen.?Verify that the user’s Twitter profile does not include the @ symbol. Activate only the (parent) theme and see if the output is correct for the Twitter icon next to the author’s name. If it is, something in the setup is breaking the output. Activate plugins one at a time to find the culprit.

Test this on your development or staging site, if you have one. If not, we recommend using the?Health Check & Troubleshooting?plugin. This plugin allows you to run a conflict check?without affecting normal visitors to your site.

As we can imagine that you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process:?How to check for plugin conflicts.
