Two levels of category names showing in URLs
-
I just switched from All-in-One SEO to Yoast SEO on my site after 12 years. Suddenly, many of my URLs that used to just include the sub-category in the URL now includes both a parent and sub-category. This is affecting rankings.
For example, I used to have mysite.com/parrots/parrot-types.html but now I have mysite.com/birds/parrots/parrot-types.html
I do have “parrots” set as a child to the “birds” parent category, but my URLs never included that top-level parent category, only the sub-level one.
I am using Yoast SEO v.14.2 and WordPress 5.4.1
My WordPress permalink is the same as it’s always been for 12 years, which is a Custom Structure: /%category%/%postname%.html
I’ve tried to change around the WP permalink settings or toggling off/on the Yoast SEO setting for “Remove the categories prefix” but I end up getting errors on my pages saying “too many redirects”.
Hopefully there is an easy fix or I just have to go back to All-in-One SEO.
