Two Sites, Two languages?

Yes, each site gets its own language. You have to set the language in the site properties on the network page. See this screenshot.

To get the correct output language for each site, install the language files from www.ads-software.com and set the language in the general settings on each site’s administration pages.

Just to confirm: So, in practice – I’d create two Sites:

domain.com (Default English)
domain.com/2ndLang

And apply the same Theme to both, and all Content to each separately, and then link Pages, Posts in authoring?

I’m working on a 3rd sector site currently using sub.domain for language handling via TinyCMS – so what you’ve confirmed is similar to how I already work.

(Incidentally, for other readers, we’re aiming to apply for the free LifeTime License of WPML given that we’re a charity – but until then this is perfect for Phase #1.)

In our free version, you cannot connect existing content. So either create one site first, and all of its content you want to translate later, or get the pro version which comes with a handy little relationship manager.

So:

Create Site 1 (ENG)
Create Site 2 (CY)

Add place holder content to each page/post and connect each page/post. Once connected, add proper content as usual, per page basis?

Must I upload all .mo files from, as is in this case – Welsh, into wp-content/languages? Or, just the cy.mo? I.e.

By the way – I would prefer the UI to remain English…

If you want to keep the admin pages in English, use just the cy.po file.
Our pro version has an user option to select the admin language per user, so each user can use her/his preferred language.

… I download the Welsh WP version, from where the above .mo/.po files are from. Which of these https://i18n.svn.www.ads-software.com/cy/ — should I install, can you guide?

That should be the mo file for the current version 3.9.
