• I presume the 3.9.2 has been done automatically…
I am now unable to access wp-admin.
    After logging in (I get a login page) I get a 404 for /wp-admin.

This, on top of losing image editing after the 3.9 update – my site is now so broken that I’m seriously considering looking for another framework to build my site with.
I’ve been using WP since 2.8, but I begin to wonder if the WP culture has changed so that it is developed for the “professionals” and the rest of us can go hang.

What is the URL of the site in question?

    [removed]

usually I don’t divulge the address on forums – it’s an excellent way to get hacked (as I’ve found to my cost) – but as things couldn’t get much worse…

Hm, I see what you mean now, I have also removed the address above.

It looks like the update may have failed, so try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

I’ll give it a try – thanks. It’s a long one for tomorrow morning !

    @ MacManX
    It worked !
Now I must decide whether to go back to the open source fork of NextGen gallery or go with the custom post setup that I’ve developed (in ignorance of the fork done by other disgruntled NextGen users)…

Perfect, I’m glad that worked for you! ??

    It’s started again !
I get to the login page but when I try to sign in, I’m taken to my home page…
Any suggestions why. As far as I can tell, there’s been no update.

Hm, that’s odd. The above fix should be a permanent thing. Let’s try something different this time.

Try manually resetting your plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

It is very weird – but it “works” again ! I went in via ftp and nosed around without actually changing anything… and I could get back into wp-admin.
I’ve come to the conclusion I’m going to have to start again from zero. The database is at least 7 years old. Its moved from one webhost to another and must contain hundreds of entries pertaining to plugins that don’t clean up after themselves…
The current theme has very few functions – a fork of twenty-eleven with virtually no modifications apart from widget areas and menus. And now we’re in html5 and css3.

Thing is, it’s all very well turning everything off etc. but if all you know is something is clashing it doesn’t help much. I haven’t found anything that tells us what is interfering. Maybe there are snippets of code we should be scanning for or something like that.
My other problem is WordPress obstinately refuses to show the image for editing – in spite of my turning everything off and on.

I’m beginning to wonder if WP shouldn’t go towards having a stripped down version and a “fully featured” one. I don’t use TinyMCE, don’t want the theme configurator… I just want it to work !

Turning things off is exactly how you find what is clashing, that’s why we suggest it. ??

If you turn everything off, and it works, then something was clashing. You then turn them back on one by one to find out exactly which one was clashing.
