• Hello,

This is my second post about this topic (original post here). I apologize for posting twice, but I did not receive a follow up response to the previous post after sending my diagnostic email several times. Here is my problem:

For the last couple of months I have been getting the following error on my site: “Unable to accurately detect IPs.” This has caused the admin users on the site to be locked out repeatedly. I have tried all of the recommendations made in your documentation and in other support threads on this forum to resolve the issue. Nothing has worked. Following are my troubleshooting steps. I ran a new scan after each step and nothing changed.

~ Tried each option under “How does Wordfence get IPs”
    ~ Cleared server cache
~ Checked my .htaccess file for any oddities or redirects. Nothing there except the standard WordPress rules.
~ Made a duplicate staging site on the same hosting account and server. It also gets this error.
~ Enabled the Twenty Twenty theme and disabled all plugins except WordFence.
~ Deleted WordFence and all its data, then re-installed and left the default settings.
~ Contacted my web host (Siteground). They checked my server configuration and error logs and found no problems that would cause this issue.
~ I do not have any trusted proxies listed.

After all of this I am still getting the error on my live and staging sites. I cannot think of anything else to do. Can you help me troubleshoot?

I just sent another diagnostic email to [email protected].

    Thanks for help!

  • Hey @celeste-9,

My apologies for your previous replies being missed.

I don’t see anything glaring in the Diagnostic report you sent over.

Are you able to share screenshots of the expanded Details regarding the blocks in Wordfence > Live Traffic? If so, I’ll bump the developers for their thoughts.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Hi Gerroald,

Here are two screenshots of a few blocked records. We also have some failed login attempts for admin users. All visitors in the live traffic list are showing the same IP address.

    Hi @celeste-9,

Someone else has a similar issue where all the detection IP methods returned the host’s IP instead of the user’s IP.

This leads me to believe that SiteGround may have misconfigured your DNS or site settings – causing all IPs to be detected as itself.

Can you ask SiteGround again to check your DNS/server configuration settings again? The detection methods that are available for Wordfence (or any plugin) do not show any other IP.

I have another update for this issue.

We’re seeing a lot of cases regarding SiteGround and IP detection with Wordfence. It turns out SiteGround migrated some of their servers, and this is causing all traffic to be routed through their own server.

At this moment, we’re asking users to reach out to SiteGround, and they have to change a specific DNS A record to point traffic correctly to your site.

Hi Dave, I appreciate the info. I spoke with Siteground and they confirmed that they moved the site to a new server a few weeks ago. I updated the DNS to the new IP address. It has propagated, but WordFence is still detecting the old IP address and continuing to give the error on a new scan.

Is there a way to force WordFence to detect the new IP address? I changed the option for “How does Wordfence get IPs,” saved it, then changed it back to the recommended method, saved again, but it is still detecting the old IP address.

Here is a screenshot of the current IP address: https://imgur.com/6h0XtaN. I took the WordFence screenshot right after running the DNS lookup tool.

    Thanks!
