Since moving from WPMU to WordPress 3.0(.1), I am unable to create a new site that’s not <subdomain>.domain.org. It insists on creating it like it’s a blog off the main site. I want a whole new site with its own collection of blogs.

I found something that referred to a creating a “network” (https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Create_A_Network), but that doesn’t seem to work. I don’t get anything in the tools menu when I enable it, and when I go to network.php, I get the following error: “The Network creation panel is not for WordPress MU networks.”

I’d really like the multi-domain capabaility back that I had with WPMU.

  • You need this plugin:
    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/wp-multi-network/

Remember, the terminology has changed. What were blogs are now sites; what was a site is now a network. So the “old” multi-site stuff is now multiple networks.

I thought the whole point of integrating MU into the codebase was so you didn’t have to use plugins for multisite.

It certainly explains why I can’t migrate my other MU install over to 3.0, though.

You’re not using plugins for multisite, you’re using them for multiple multisites.

    Basically you’re turning Multi-Site into Multi-Multi-Site. ??

OK, now my head is spinning. ??

OK, still having problems after installing the multi-network plugin.

I’m unable to add users to a site (and apparently the admin user is not added by default). Also, when I create a site, I don’t have a dropdown asking me which network to create the site in.

I want a whole new site with its own collection of blogs.

That’s what you said in your first post. ??

If you want it all in one huge installation, in MU it was called multisite. that term means something else in 3.0, as I explained above.

When you;re using multiple network, you need to go to that network’s admin area and add sites there. you can;t add sites to multiple networks from one spot.

OK, it turns out that there’s a minor bug – You can’t log in to the newly created sites unless you specify a path when you create them, even if it’s “/”. Leaving that blank is not a valid option.

As such, that field should be mandatory or default to “/”.
