unable to add widgets to sidebar

  • i’ve created a child theme for 2017. if i try to change the widgets using the customizer i get the following error message:

    There are no widget areas on the page shown, however other pages in this theme do have them.

    however i can change the widgets from the appearances > widgets menu.

    i’ve tested the code on 4.7.1 and 4.8alpha from svn and they both experience the same issue. Any ideas how i can edit widgets and placement from the child theme?

  • Have you try navigating to a post in your customizer preview?
    Doing so will allow you to set your sidebar widgets.

    No… will explore that and see if it resolves the issue. However this was not a problem in prior versions of WordPress
