• I installed wp in a sub-directory and the site address (I believe) automatically included the sub e.g. – https://example.com/wordpress.
I’m trying to change the Site address back to the root following this instruction:
    4. In the box for Site address (URL): change the address to the root directory’s URL. Example: https://example.com.
But it won’t let me. I get a popup warning: Modifying this field will cause your permalinks to malfunction. We strongly recommend that you do not change this field.
Why is this? How can I override it, or shouldn’t I?
BTW, site is not a blog, it will probably be all static pages (for now).
    Please help.

  • That’s very strange. I wonder if the theme you are using added that in. I’ve never seen that kind of warning before.
Can you provide a link to your site? If the theme is a commercial one, you might need to contact them.

I would also try switching to the twenty ten theme and see what happens then.

I’ve done this millions of times and the permalinks are fine.

I don’t see the email response I sent you from my phone when I was out, so I’m copying it below.

Hmmm. I’ll try switching themes when I get back. Maybe problem is I’m using child theme, maybe not in orthodox way. Not commercial theme.
Permalinks is another question I have. I’m on default, which I think means I don’t have permalinks on. Is that correct?
    I’m a real newbie!
Trying to keep same structure as my static site LoudounWrestling.com. Practice page is /WPLW/test-page.
Thanks for your help. I’ll try your suggestion in couple hours.

Now I’m back. I switched to TwentyTen theme, went to Settings>General, and tried to delete the subdirectory from Site address again. When I click in the box I get the same message as before.
The codex says I can change it but WP won’t let me. Any suggestions?
    Thanks again.

Modifying this field will cause your permalinks to malfunction.

That’s not a WordPress core message.

I dont know what you mean. I copied the message from the window that popped up when I clicked in the Site Address box.

That message does exist in any WordPress 3.3.1 core file. It’s simply not coming from WordPress itself.
