    Hello,

I can no longer access my administrator dashboard. I activated debug mode and got the following error messages:
Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by

I then checked that there were no white spaces before the <?php and I changed the encoding to UTF-8-BOM on the files concerned but nothing changed

I tried deactivating my plugins, nothing changes
I changed the theme (I can do it via Plesk even without admin access) and I no longer have any error messages since the previous error messages were from the theme file but I still cannot not log in. I no longer have any error messages, the login page just reloads when i try to log in.
I tried to change the password using Lost Password? link but I don’t receive the password change email.
I have cookies enabled on the site, the WordPress test cookie is present

I don’t know what to do as I don’t get any error messages, any ideas?

    Hi @tomcmp,

I understand how this can be an inconvenience to you. You have mentioned that you are unable to login to your WordPress admin page. Are you getting an error when logging in?

If it is a password issue, and no email reset is coming in, you may reset your password manually through the database. You may check this article for reference.

    All the best!

As I said there is no error message when I use a default wordpress theme :/

I did change the password but nothing change, even when the credentials are correct I have no error message and I can’t login

If you don’t have the error under a default WordPress theme, you’ll need to report the issue to your theme’s support so they can fix it.

    Hello,

I don’t think it’s a theme related issue, I tried with another theme (Kadence) and still can’t login without getting an error message

    (@macmanx)

Ok, what is the full error message?

Sorry I meant there is no error message and I can’t login

Earlier you mentioned seeing “Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by” when you try to log in.

The full version of that error message will help us identify the problem.

If you’re no longer seeing that, what, specifically, happens when you try to log in?

When I had my old theme (Divi) activated I had the “Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by” error message and also the “cookies are blocked due to unexpected output” error message but when I changed to another theme (I tried with Twenty Twenty-Four and Kadence) I no longer have error message but I still can’t login

Nothing happens, the login page simply reloads, no error message is displayed

Is there any improvement after clearing all of your cookies for the site’s domain?

    Unfortunately no

Ok, try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

If you’d like to manually make a backup of your site first, please follow the steps at https://www.ads-software.com/documentation/article/wordpress-backups/

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

The site pages except for the front page are now returning a 404 error but I still have access to the back office login url and I still cannot log in and I still don’t get an error message :/

It’s possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP or FTP or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, ensure that you have set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.

I had the same result as when I replaced the site files :
The site pages except for the front page are now returning a 404 error but I still have access to the back office login url and I still cannot log in and I still don’t get an error message

Do you have a backup prior to the original problem that you can restore?

Have you changed any server configuration recently?
