I’ve just successfully installed WordPress 3.0 onto a subdomain and everything was going smoothly until I tried to upload a custom header and got the message: Unable to create directory /var/www/vhosts/eskyweb.com/subdomains/blog/httpdocs/wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I have searched this forum and read every thread on the problem but nothing has fixed it. I’ve tried:

    1) deleting and re-uploading all the wordpress files on my ftp
    2) changing permissions of the wp-content and even httpdocs folders to 766, 767 and 777
    3) creating an uploads directory manually via ftp
    4) checking PHP safe mode on the server – it’s off
    5) checking minimum requirements – that’s fine
    6) making sure settings > media > store uploads in this folder was set to wp-content/uploads

I still can’t upload any images. Please help!

Make sure the uploads folder specifically is 777 and JUST that folder for now. Sometimes CHMOD doesn’t go recursive, even when we tell it ??

Just tried that again and still no luck. I’ve also just upgraded to WordPress 3.0.1 and tried everything again with no results. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks

Actually it’s now working and I’m not sure which change fixed it! During various tests I had ticked the box that archives images by date. After the upgrade to WP3.0.1 and a test to try uploading a header (which still threw up the same error message as yesterday) I decided to untick the option to store images by date. Then I went back to the header and was able to successfully upload it!
    Well, that’s a relief anyway.

Edit: The uploads folder is still set to 777. I tried changing it back to 755 but got the error again. I guess I’ll have to keep it at 777.

So it’s unable to make the date folders. How … odd. You may have a weird PHP set up that requires special ownership for PHP files to make folders. Ask you host?

Not advisable to set the directories to chmod 777 (i.e.Security Issues). If you have checked the box that says “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” via Settings -> Media, then you have to manually create the wp-content/uploads folder, Year folder (e.g. uploads/2011), Month folder (e.g. 2011/05) and set the chmod to 775 to each of these directories.
