I’ve been unable to edit images using the WordPress media image editor so decided to do a bit of research to find out what the root cause was.

I re-activated 2015 Theme, switched to media library, chose an image and the ability to edit / crop image etc becomes available as expected.

I re-activated Customizr theme, switched to media library and the ability to edit / crop images is available.

I re-activated customizr-child theme, switched to media library, chose a file and the image is no longer there so cannot edit / crop etc with the image editor. The thumbnail was still in the RHS but the image is not shown (some sort of small icon in the LHS corner of the editor, not the actual image so it’s not possible to do any editing.

I replaced my customizr-child theme functions.php & style.css with empty versions, i reloaded and was still unable to edit a media file using the image editor.

Finally I delete the empty files so the customise-child theme folder had no files but it was still the active theme. I switched to the media library, chose an image and the image is available again in the editor.

It looks like there is a problem with customizr-child theme making the image editor unable to load an image to be edited when the child theme functions.php and style.css files exist. Which kind of defeats the objective of having a child theme.

I’ve tried this with both Safari & Chrome on a Mac, same problem.

Dropping the original functions.php and style.css back in the child folder causes the image editor to malfunction gain.

Does anyone have a workaround other than making the changes in customizr theme then re-activating the child theme.

  • Hi,
I’m unable to reproduce your issue with my child theme.
Does this happens just with a customizr child-theme for you?
Also you say something which has no sense:

I replaced my customizr-child theme functions.php & style.css with empty versions, i reloaded and was still unable to edit a media file using the image editor.

Finally I delete the empty files so the customise-child theme folder had no files but it was still the active theme. I switched to the media library, chose an image and the image is available again in the editor.

What do you mean with empty “files”? Did the child style.css pointed to the parent with the Template: customizr attribute? If not, it wasn’t a child.
Also, deleting the style.css from whatever theme dir makes that “theme” stopping to be a theme. Without a correct style.css wordpress reverts to one of the default themes.

It only seems to happen with the customizr child theme.

I loaded completely new child files i.e. they just have the comments at the top with no additions to them to prove to myself it was nothing I’d done wrt. function or style change.
The child theme is therefor active but nothing has been added tp or overridden from the from the original customiser theme. But image editing doesn’t work.

As soon as I remove these files – even though they have no content, the image editing works properly just like the standard customizr theme does when it is active. This makes sense as you say since it should just revert to the parent and it should work, and it does.
As soon as a function.php and style.css are saved into the customizr-child theme folder and it is made the active theme, then image editing does’t work. It’s perplexing.

    Yes it’s perplexing indeed..

I am having this problem also, using evolve theme. I am not sure when it started, originally even with my current theme, I was able to edit media files. Now I have just an icon showing also
