• Hello,

I’m unable to edit the menus in the menu structure section of the admin panel.

When the structure renders in the browser, the menu text left justifies and the arrows to edit become invisible. Here’s a screen capture of the behavior.

I’ve tried using the 2014 and 2013 themes with all plugins deactivated and I’ve tried using the Google API for the JavaScript libraries. I even went as far as renaming my plugins folder so none of them could load. I’ve tried other browsers as well and other computers, but nothing seems to work.

The console in Chrome does not show any errors. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

  • Have you recently upgraded WordPress?

From the screenshot it looks like the menu admin screen is not loading correctly. I would expect to be seeing some errors in Google Chrome’s console relating to CSS and/or JS.

If you see any errors in these console logs then paste them back as it may give a clearer indication as to the issue.

I’ve upgraded multiple times since I last needed to edit the menus, so I can’t pin it on a particular upgrade. The only thing in the console is the following:

event.returnValue is deprecated. Please use the standard event.preventDefault() instead. jquery.js?ver=1.10.2:4

That would suggest that perhaps everything is OK with the install then.

A couple of things you could try:

    1. Re-installing WordPress from the admin upgrade screen. e.g. https://example.com/wp-admin/update-core.php – using the “Re-install” button.

    2. Install WordFence https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wordfence/ and see if the core scan detects any incomplete, missing or compromised files.

I reinstalled using the core update and the issue hasn’t changed. I’m running a Wordfence scan, but it’s taking a long time. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I still haven’t been able to resolve this issue. Does anyone else have ideas? Upgrading to 3.8.2 did not help.

    Site url?

Your site s not using the default 2014 theme and is currently running multiple plugins. Try:

    – switching to the default theme.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

I’ve done all of that before and it did not correct the issue.

    Hi all,

This is still an issue. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi jolives,

It might not solve your problem, but just for curiosity, what happens when you create a new Menu set ?

Does it show the same error?

    Eric,

Yes, it does the exact same thing when I create a new menu.

    Thank you,
    Joel

[Moderator Note: No bumping, thank you.]

    Hi,
I’ve just encountered exactly the same error on a site after upgrading to Version 4.0 of WordPress.
Following the suggestion offered by Scott, I re-installed the WordPress 4 core, and the problem has now gone – the site (and menu editor) is now back to working as before.
Many thanks to Scott for his suggestion.
    John
