Hi … updated to 3.6.1 from 3.5.1 two days ago (automatically done by HostGator) and now trying to scale and install images into a new page I’m building. Automatic scale option not working. It displays NaN in the scaling box. When on the page I’m building a click on Add Media … nothing happens.
Any advice please? Please bear in mind I am NOT a techie was will need a simple explanation!! Much appreciated !!

    Have you tried:
-deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try deactivating via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. If applicible, also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old.
    – To rule out any theme-specific issue, try switching to the unedited default theme for a moment using the WP dashboard. If you don’t have access to your admin area, you can switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme. That will force your site to use it.
resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive). Read “How to deactivate all plugins when you can’t log in to wp-admin” if you need help.
    – If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the issue, try manually re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!

Hi Tara …. big thanks for your reply. Yes I can get into dashboard so I’ll try your first suggestion. I did mention that I’m non techie … so if the first plan fails then I’m stuck as I don’t understand your other suggestions !! I do wish wordpress would leave thinga alone as I get problems every time there is an upgrade!! Thanks again ……

Pssst… Just between us: even though we strongly encourage people to always update to the latest version of WP, you should always check if the plugins and your theme are tested with it. Meaning, a new version of WP might cause a plugin/theme to misbehave. It’s not WP fault. It’s just something that happens when a plugin/theme either isn’t well coded or it needs additional code to work properly.
Don’t panic. Read what Tara wrote and go thru those steps carefully. I would suggest to backup everything (or at least the database) before any major changes.
Don’t hesitate to ask if you’re unsure of something mentioned above.

Thank you Media X Appreciate your offer of help …. I might well need it. What I find so confusing is that the problem I have is with the basic functionality of WP …i.e media scaling and installing, which isn’t linked to any plug-ins I’ve installed !? Anyway I’m going to try the deactivation advice from Tara and see how I get one. Gulp !! Cheers

Those steps I listed above are basic troubleshooting steps. Please attepmt them to solve or narrow down the problem.

As Media X suggested, always keep a current backup of your site (including DB), in case.

For backingup, here are some useful codex:

So you do not want known security issues in your site to be rectified?

Well, with big thanks to Tara and Media X I have now solved the problem. I noticed that a number of my plug-ins had up-dates which I hadn’t installed. So I’ve been through them all and updated, and deactivated a couple that I’m not using …. and phew I’m back working.

Sorry esmi in my ignorance I thought it was a WP issue. I did say in my original post that I’m not a techie … so I find everything a steep learning curve!

Tara …. I definitely will look at the back up links …. thanks again for being there to help novices like me ??
