• After updating the version of WP to 5.4, and many plugins which hadn’t been updated in a while, I tried to edit posts and pages on my site, only to be met with this error message:

There has been a critical error on your website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions. Learn more about debugging in WordPress.

Unfortunately, I never received an email!

I don’t know much about PHP, nor do I want to mess around with the code on my site. I’m not sure why updating some plugins would have resulted in this error. I also deleted one plugin, but it was a frivolous plugin called Hello Dolly which displayed lyrics from Hello, Dolly in the upper right of the admin screen on every page.

Could getting rid of Hello Dolly be the real source of my problem? I sure hope not.

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
