Unable To Edit Template Files (Hosted on a server)

    I was fiddling around with my new WordPress blog. I wanted to edit the template manually so I went to Presentation > Theme Editor to edit some template files manually.

    However I found the following message displayed at the bottom of the screen: “If this file were writable you could edit it.”

    So I went and checked whether the template files were wrte-protected on the server. They weren’t.

    So could someone help me with this? Thanks in advance.

    Are the theme files at 644? Doesn’t matter if YOU can write to ’em, you want the “apache user” to be able to (assuming you’re apache hosted, that is) if you’re going to use the built in theme editor stuff.

    You have a very good point. I went back and checked. The permissions were originally 644. It doesn’t work. I even set it to 777. Still didn’t work. I’m hosted with a free account at https://iconrate.net and the blog is at https://marc.iconrate.net/marcz

    I installed the blog through Fantastico.

    Is there any other way to edit the files? Can I do it manually by editing the file in some sort of editor and re-upload it to the server? However, the whole thing seems to consist of functions.

    Yes, I always edit my template files in a text editor (like Notepad, PSPad etc.) and upload the modified files via FTP. And I always make a backup of the original in case something goes wrong.

    I’d rather edit the files within the theme editor.

    Any solutions to my problem? (Meanwhile I will also contact my host and ask for help.)

    I’d like some help please… My host doesn’t seem to know what the problem is either.

    What’s the permissions on the “themes” folder?
    What’s the permissions on the folder containing the theme you wish to edit?
    What’s the permissions of the files in that folder?
